Real Estate Draguignan: Houses and Villas for Sale

Draguignan is a charming and lively market town which well deserves its reputation as a favourite cultural destination for visitors. Situated in the centre of the Var department of Provence, those who choose to invest in property Draguignan enjoy the best of both worlds. Enjoying all the benefits of living in a well-established town with an unmistakably Provencale ambiance, they are never far from the splendid local countryside and a wide variety of timeless neighbouring villages.

Life in Draguignan means enjoying delightful markets, first-class shopping and other cultural highlights as well as an abundant offering of nightlife. Although it is not known by travellers to be as ‘rustic’ as some of its neighbouring villages, Draguignan still provides the tapered streets, secret alleys and hand carved building accents that drive certain interest and flavour its property offerings. The capital of the Var during the French Revolution, Draguignan has much to offer history buffs and activity seekers alike.

As can easily be deduced by its name, Draguignan, of course, comes from the Latin word for ‘dragon’ and refers to the mythical reptilian that was said to have troubled the early pilgrims of the region. This dragon was slain by a bishop called Hermentaire, whose statue can be found in the church of St. Michel. Today, it is possible to visit the Gorges de Chateaudouble where the fabled beast was finally banished.

Boasting beautiful old houses, the streets of Draguignan are a great place to take a stroll. The labyrinths of narrow roads host a range of interesting shops and cafés. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, it is a delight to sample local delicacies including cheeses, olives and nut breads at the Place du Marché. Afterwards, it can be lovely to visit the 17th century clock tower that overlooks the countryside or enjoy a show in the open air of the Theatre de Verdure.

The two museums of Draguignan host many charming local archaeological finds. Both the Musée Municipal and the Musée des Traditions Provencales are great places for discovering insights into the rich cultural history of this town. Also, they are home to some very rare pieces including a Latin bible from the 15th century and a collection of Renoirs and Rembrandts to delight even the most discerning art afficionado.

Draguignan is a lively and extremely accessible town that posseses its own unique brand of Provençal charm. Coast & Country offer a range of property for sale in Draguignan.
