Real Estate Fayence: Villas and Houses for Sale

Situated between the Esterel Mountains and the foothills of the Alps, a short distance from Draguignan and Grasse, Fayence is a charming hilltop village that serves as a wonderful base from which to explore the region. The town is well serviced and has a number of good restaurants and day-to-day shops as well as a range of tourist and craft shops. Fayence is full of charming properties, and if you are a fan of village life and outdoor pursuits then it is an ideal place to look for accommodation.

Fayence forms part of a string of perched villages that were originally constructed to form a band of fortifications against invaders approaching from the sea. Although the chateau that used to form the focal point of Fayence’s own fortifications was pulled down in the 18th century, its ruins are nevertheless well worth a visit as is the 13th century Saracen gate, which exhibits some wonderful carvings and represents the last remaining gate from the original fortifications.

The town itself is characterised by its narrow winding streets and stairways. Amongst its key attractions is the 18th century Église St Jean-Baptiste, which features beautiful frescoes and a spectacular marble altarpiece by a local sculptor named Dominique Fossati. Indeed the town is still a centre for local arts and crafts and has a number of workshops producing a range of wares, including pottery, stone and wood carving all of which are available in the local craft shops as well as at the lively Saturday market.

The countryside around Fayence is also well worth exploring and hosts a range of activities including horse riding, hiking and a variety of water-sports. Popular hiking trails can be found at Bauroux and the plateau de Caussols while the Sentier Martel represents a challenging six-hour hike along the banks of the Verdon River. Indeed the Gorges du Verdon is a great location for a range of water-related including swimming, pedalo-hire and for the more daring, white water rafting and canoeing.
