Tourrettes sur Loup is situated between sea and mountain, 14 kilometres from the nearest beaches of the French Riviera beaches and surrounded by various peaks. It is famous for its superbly maintained medieval fortified centre built on a rocky spur where the outer houses form part of the ramparts. Around this historic center the residential area spreads out on the surrounding slopes (Pic de Courmettes, Puy de Tourrettes, Naouri) to the gorges of the Loup valley.

A century ago violets grew wild here and today the cultivation of this delicate flower constitutes one of the main activities in the area and has earned Tourrettes sur Loup the title of the City of Violets.

Appreciated by film producers from 1925, Tourrettes became a meeting place for musicians, painters, writers and poets, and saw a creation revival in the fifties. Artisan weavers settled there and, in their impetus, attracted other disciplines of quality. Today, more than thirty workshops and galleries make it a an important place for arts and crafts on the French Riviera. Tourrettes sur Loup, which has a green star in the Michelin Green guide, is a much appreciated tourist centre and residential area. However it has managed to retain the character of a typical Provençal village avoiding the excesses of some of its neighbours.
