Situated in a verdant valley some 10km to the north of Cannes, Valbonne is a beautiful old town that has experienced a rapid expansion since the 1970’s. Due to the proximity of the nearby Sophia Antipolis Science Park, the town has attracted a large Anglophone population, many of whom have purchased properties in Valbonne’s old centre. The town has a full range of modern amenities and represents an extremely good location for ex-pats to set up home in a more international environment.

The name of the town is derived from the term ‘vallis bonne’ which literally translates as ‘good valley’. Amongst the oldest buildings in Valbonne is the recently restored Romanesque-Gothic monastery, which was founded by the Chalaisan order of monks in the year 1200. The village itself dates from the 16^th century and is notable for its rectilinear street pattern, which was laid out by the Abbot of Lérins in the manner of Roman settlements.

Thanks to the fact that ancient ramparts surround it, the historic centre of Valbonne has survived largely intact and the village retains much of its Renaissance heritage. At the centre of the village lies the 16^th century Place des Arcades, a beautiful old square that is enclosed on all four sides by picturesque arcades that are nowadays inhabited by a range of cafés, restaurants and attractive boutiques.

Surrounding the square is a labyrinth of pretty streets lined with ochre stone houses characterised by their flower bedecked portals, pastel coloured shutters and intricately carved stone portals. These ancient streets are frequently interrupted by shady little squares and are cooled by numerous stone fountains. They also host a range of delightful restaurants including the Le Cadran Solaire, which is known for its authentic French cuisine and affordable wine list.
